About the Collection

St. Paul’s Schools, built in 1866 by John Walter III on land he purchased from Mr. Palmer of Holme Park, were designed to accommodate 325 children and infants. Prompted by public concern over poor living conditions for children, Mr. Walter—Member of Parliament, local benefactor, and owner of The Times—contributed most of the £1,000 (£107,371 today) cost, with additional support from parishioners and fundraisers. Mr. Walter's son, Arthur Fraser Walter also supported the school, financing it's enlargement in the early 1900s.

Initially housing both Infant and Junior departments, the schools grew in size with Wokingham. In 1967, the Junior School moved to Oxford Road, and the original building became Walter County Infant School. By 1975, the infants relocated to a new site on Murray Road, later renamed the Walter Infant School and Nursery. Today, the influence of the Walter family can still be seen in their logo (a part of the Walter family coat of arms).
